Cazotte, Jacques (1719–1792)
French romance writer and the reputed author of the famous
Prophétie de Cazotte, concerning the French Revolution. As
his sympathies were not with the revolutionary party, his letters
were seized, and he and his daughter Elizabeth were thrown
into prison. He was later beheaded. He was also the author of
the celebrated occult romance Le Diable Amoureux (1787).
