Gauthier, Jean
Self-described alchemist of the sixteenth century. Charles
IX (15501574) of France, deceived by his promises, provided
him with 120,000 pounds with which to make gold. After he
had worked for a week, he ran away with the kings money. He
was pursued, captured, and hanged.
